About the Show

January 20, 2009 by Lee Thomas

Alex (Stephen Mangan) is a talent agent suffering all the sadness and pain of divorce. In the office opposite him is Helen (Sharon Horgan) a talent agent suffering all the sadness and pain of bereavement. They’re perfect for each other. According to Alex. According to Helen, he has got to be bloody joking. There’s no way she’s having sex with Alex. Again. Not after the last two times they had sex. Absolutely not….

Set in a world where everyone – the agents, the agents’ boss (Anthony Head), the agents’ clients, the agents’ friends and relations and ex-girlfriends and accountants – are all as bizarrely screwed up as Alex and Helen – Free Agents is a dark, poignant comedy. An on-but-mostly-off romance about a couple who might just have a future if they can ever shake off their past(s)….

Rose D’or Nominated Best Situation Comedy 2009.

i’m convinced that i’ve seen the first episode before .Or something very much like it. Was there a pilot shown some months or maybe a year or so before. My wife thinks i’ve lost it.

Free Agents did have a pilot in Channel 4’s Comedy Showcase in November 2007.

I absolutely love this show. I’ve seen two episodes and I’m hooked. I came because of Anthony Head and Matt Holness, but all the characters together are what make the show rock hardcore.

I can’t wait to see more of Anthony Head and Stephen Mangan together in his flat, and also Matt Holness (cause he’s hilarious).

    Wonderful work, guys! :)

I think that ‘Free Agents’ is brilliant. The honesty of the script is refreshing and its witty delivery by Sharon and Stephen is so entertaining. I love the juxtaposition of the ignorant vanity of the setting with the elegiac personalities of Helen and Alex.

I find Sharon especially endearing. Through ‘Pulling’, she conveyed the confidence and intelligence to challenge established perceptions of women, both in the media in her capacity as writer and in general through the three leading characters. I look forward to seeing more of her work…and I hope that it similarly bears the candour of ‘Pulling’ and ‘Free Agents’.

Hi — terrific series, many congrats.

    Couple of questions:

    (1) Is the pilot, which I unfortunately haven’t seen, on the DVD?

    (2) Series 2?

    Thanks.

I love this show came to it after seeing Stephen’s interview promoting it, wasn’t sure but now I can’t miss it. Helen and Alex together the quick banter is funny yet touching and Anthony Head is hilarious – I’ve watched it over and over – bring on tonight’s! Second series please :D

  11. Lee Thomas on March 20th, 2009 3:46 pm

The Pilot is unfortunately not on the DVD – however we’ll keep you posted on any further developments.

Series 2? There are definitely more stories to tell, time will tell.

i absolutely must know where sharon’s silk kimono-style dressing gown is from, worn at various points in the series – please could somebody put me out of my pathetically materialistic misery…. I MUST KNOW! oh and very much enjoyed the rest of the series aswell ;)

  17. Lee Thomas on April 15th, 2009 1:54 am

The Kimono-style dressing gown is vintage and from the costume designers own collection.

  18. sarah on April 16th, 2009 11:19 am

Does anyone know who did the styling/wardrobe for Free Agents? Ah – I was just about to ask where the beautiful kimono-style dressing gown was from and I see that it’s already been answered. What a shame it’s not available – I love it! I thought the styling was excellent

I thought this was an absolutely brilliant comedy. Very dark, very sharp, very rude and realistic where it needed to be… well done all involved.

Sharon & Stephen absolutely superb and the chemistry is perfect.

    Bring on Series 2!!!

Just watched the entire series on DVD in one session having missed all but the pilot on TV (I find it hard to watch channel 4 without running into Gok Wan so I just avoid it to be on the safe side) and loved it. Please tell me there will be a second series

I love the costume and styling for the character of Helen, absolutely mouth watering use of colours and patterns. I’d love to know who has done this and where the clothes are sourced from, are they available on high street or specially designed?

  25. Hale on September 8th, 2009 10:26 am

I loved the show and hope there will be a series 2! The costume designer has done an amazing job. Never write comments on anything on the internet, but could not seriously get enough of the show. Thanks to all the crew who did a great job!

Fantastic comedy, we really enjoyed this show, just shown here in Australia.
Hope so so much we can look forward to a second series. Such chararcters, so flawed and endearing…..very funny too. ……and must agree with everyone, Helen’s clothes looked fabulous and she carried them off beautifully.

  27. ec501 on January 15th, 2010 10:46 am

This was one of the best new programmes of 2009, but nowhere can I find out whether there’s going to be a second series.

So, does anybody know whether there is going to be a second series? It would be criminal if there isn’t going to be more because there is so much scope left.

What song is playing in the 5th episode when Alex and Helen talkinging about Helen`s birthday? It must be from the eighties.
